Don’t give up on your dreams

Most people don’t set out to give up on a goal. It just gets pushed aside, day after day, until months or even years – have gone by and you haven’t looked at it once. That’s not giving up. It just means life got in the way for a while, and the dream has been waiting for you to come back to it.

Why dreams get shelved
Most of the time, you don’t decide to give up on a goal. You just skip the course one week because you’re tired, then again the next. You tell yourself you’ll pick it back up next month. Before long, it’s been a year.

Often it’s bigger life changes doing the pulling. Getting married, having children, or looking after an ageing or elderly parent all reshape your days and take up the energy you used to spend on yourself. That’s not a lack of discipline. It’s what happens when other people need you, and your own goals move down the queue for a while.

What balance actually looks like
Balance doesn’t mean splitting your day into neat halves. It just means your dream gets a seat at the table alongside everything else on your plate. A few things that help:

  • Shrink the goal, not the dream. Big ambitions feel more doable once broken into something small enough to act on this week.
  • Protect small pockets of time. Fifteen minutes here and there still count, even on a packed day.
  • Be honest with yourself. There’s a difference between pausing a goal and quietly letting it go. Knowing which one you’re doing helps you decide what’s next.
  • Let priorities shift without guilt. Some seasons call for more focus on other people, and that’s not failure, just sequencing.

Your dreams are allowed to change
Your dreams will probably shift as you move through different stages of life, and that’s completely normal. What mattered at 25 may not be what matters at 45 or 65. The important thing is to keep listening to yourself, rather than assuming it’s too late or that your chance has passed. Making space for others doesn’t mean losing yourself, it just means your own goals might need to wait their turn, not disappear altogether.

A dream that’s been sitting untouched for a while isn’t proof it was unrealistic. Sometimes it’s just been waiting for the right timing, energy or support.

If you’re finding it hard to balance what matters to you with everything else you’re juggling, a NMG SmartAssist Programme life coach or counsellor is there to talk it through, confidentially and at no cost to you.
