Forming healthy habits

Think about the different areas of your life where you can make healthy shifts for the months ahead e.g. in relationships, financially, your work habits, diet and/or exercise. If you achieve goals in one area, you’ll likely reap rewards in other areas. Good habits in one area can lead to benefits in other areas e.g. a fitter, healthier you may result in more energy at home or work.

Get smart

Choose goals wisely. Rather than setting a huge goal that is intimidating or difficult to reach, reframe resolutions as smaller goals that can be achieved.  For example:

  • Name five things to be grateful for, daily, and repeat, “this too shall pass” when in a tight spot.
  • Reduce social media time and use the additional time productively.
  • Set dedicated time aside for yourself and your family.
  • Look for opportunities to compliment at least one person a day or make others feel better about themselves.
  • Volunteer at a shelter or soup kitchen once a month, help an elderly neighbour with shopping or collect used clothing for the shelter.
  • Make healthy eating choices e.g. replacing desserts or sweets with fruit, and avoiding processed food.
  • Take the stairs where you can rather than elevators, walk a few blocks daily, and join an exercise class.

Commit

Keep your goals visible (e.g. on the bathroom mirror or fridge) and choose someone who can hold you accountable. You may even decide to share a particular goal with that person and motivate each other to remain committed. Celebrating small milestones will encourage you.
