Most of us know that chest pain can be a sign of a heart attack. What many people don’t realise is that heart attacks don’t always look the same, especially in women. Knowing what to watch for can help you recognise the signs sooner, in yourself or someone you care about.
Did you know? In South Africa, five people have a heart attack every single hour.
Research shows women are more likely to experience symptoms that are subtle or easy to mistake for something else. Men are more likely to experience the symptoms most of us associate with a heart attack.
Heart attack symptoms in men
Men often experience symptoms that come on suddenly and are easier to recognise:
- A heavy, tight or crushing pain in the chest
- Pain that spreads to the left arm, shoulder, neck or jaw
- Shortness of breath
- Cold sweats
- Feeling faint or dizzy
Heart attack symptoms in women
Women can experience chest pain too, but it may feel milder, more like pressure or tightness. Other signs to know:
- Unusual or overwhelming fatigue, sometimes for days beforehand
- Pain in the upper back, shoulders, neck or jaw
- Shortness of breath during everyday activities
- Nausea, vomiting or indigestion-like discomfort
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- A sense that something just isn’t right
These symptoms can also resemble indigestion, flu or exhaustion, so they’re easy to overlook. Trust your instincts. If something feels severe, sudden or not normal for you, get emergency medical care straight away.
A family history of heart disease can raise your risk, but it doesn’t decide your future. Knowing it simply helps you and your healthcare provider stay a step ahead.
Everyday ways to look after your heart
Small habits, kept up consistently, make a real difference over time:
- Move in ways you enjoy, whether that’s walking, dancing, swimming or gardening
- Add colour to your meals with a good variety of fruit and vegetables
- Book regular health checks so you know your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
- Take the first step towards quitting if you smoke or vape, support is available
- Get enough sleep so your body has time to rest and recover
- Make space to unwind, whether that’s time with family, being outdoors or listening to music
- Take prescribed medication as directed if you’re managing blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes
Your heart works hard for you every day. Knowing the warning signs and building in a few heart-friendly habits can help keep it strong for years to come.
