How to Deal with Workplace Bullying

Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect and work in an environment that is safe and free of harassment.

Bullying is a form of harassment that typically involves physical or verbal abuse and can cause psychological or mental harm.

Forms of bullying

Physical bullying is the most obvious form of intimidation, however, bullying comes in different forms and some are not always easy to determine – especially in the workplace.  Some indications that you may be bullied include:

  • Being treated unfairly and blocked from leave, promotion, or denied training opportunities without valid explanations.
  • Being intentionally excluded or isolated from team discussions and decisions.
  • Given impossible deadlines or pressure that set you up for failure.
  • Having your opinions belittled or mocked.
  • Being physically or verbally abused.
  • Being yelled at or constantly criticized.
  • Being humiliated in front of colleagues.
  • Being threatened and/or gossiped about.

If you or someone you know experienced bullying, discuss the situation with someone you trust and seek support. Try to solve the issue informally by talking to the person who is causing you distress directly.
