The free superpower everybody smiles about

There is a superpower sitting on your face right now, and it costs nothing to use. It does not need charging, training or a subscription. It is your smile, and it works even when you do not fully feel like using it.

The science behind the grin
When you smile, your brain releases a small cocktail of feel-good chemicals: dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. These lower stress and lift mood, and they do this whether the smile started out genuine or not. Your brain is not always fussy about the difference. Stanford University researchers found that simply posing a smile, even one that starts out completely fake, produces a real, measurable increase in happiness. Your face can talk your brain into a better mood before your mood catches up.

Why it spreads
Smiling is contagious in the most literal sense. Seeing someone smile activates the same muscles and the same brain regions in the person watching. That is one reason a genuine smile from a colleague, a stranger in the lift, or a child across the room can shift your whole morning. You are not imagining the ripple effect. It is measurable.

Smiling also quietly connects us socially. People read a smile as a signal of warmth, safety and trust, often before a single word is exchanged. It smooths first meetings, softens hard conversations and makes teams easier to work with.

Making it a habit

  • Smile before you feel like it. The mood often follows the expression, not the other way round.
  • Notice other people’s smiles. Let yourself catch them instead of scrolling past.
  • Use it in small moments. Greeting someone, answering the phone, walking into a meeting.

None of this means forcing positivity over real struggles. Some days a smile will not come easily, and that is completely normal. But on the days it can, it is one of the simplest tools available for lifting your own mood and someone else’s at the same time.

If you are finding it hard to access moments of joy or connection lately, a NMG SmartAssist Programme counsellor is available, confidentially and at no cost, to talk it through with you.
