What a life coach actually does, and how to know if you need one

A life coach is someone trained to help you think clearly, set direction, and follow through on the changes you want to make. They’re not a therapist, and not a friend giving advice over coffee. A coach holds a structured space for you to work out what you want and how to get there, and holds you accountable along the way.

What life coaching actually involves
Sessions are structured conversations. A coach asks questions that get past the surface, helps you spot patterns and blind spots in your own thinking, and supports you in setting goals to improve your life. Coaching differs from counselling, which often looks back to help you process difficult experiences. Coaching looks forward. A good coach also knows when a topic needs a different kind of support, and will point you toward it.

What coaching can help with

  • Change and life transitions, big or small
  • Goals and action plans you can actually follow through on
  • Resilience and coping skills for pressure and setbacks
  • A growth mindset, seeing challenges as workable rather than fixed
  • Emotional regulation and staying steady under stress
  • Healthy choices and routines to ground you
  • Clearer communication skills and boundaries
  • Breaking unhelpful patterns and improving work-life integration

Coaching adapts to whatever you bring to it.

Who coaching is for, including your family
Coaching isn’t only people chasing an ambitious goal. It works well for:

  • Parents and caregivers who want a clearer sense of direction
  • You or your partner working through a shift at home
  • Employees feeling flat, stretched thin, or unsure what’s next
  • Teenagers and young adults finding their footing with exams, friendships, or the general unpredictability of growing up

You don’t need a crisis to gain from coaching. Many people start because they feel stuck, or want to be more intentional about how they live, work, and support the people around them.

Signs it might be time to reach out

  • You feel busy but not productive, without a clear sense of purpose
  • You keep putting off a decision because you’re unsure which direction is right
  • You’ve reached a goal and aren’t sure what’s next
  • Your household feels stretched, with everyone managing their own load but no shared plan

None of these means anything is wrong with you or your family. They’re simply signs that outside support could help.

You don’t need a perfect plan to start, just the willingness to have the conversation. A NMG SmartAssist Programme life coach offers confidential support, at no cost to you, for you and your family, with no pressure and no judgement. Reach out and take the first step toward more clarity, confidence, and growth.
